Sibiu County


The archaeological discoveries made within the county confirm the fact that the area was inhabited since the Palaeolithic period. At the beginning of the 11th century, with the Hungarians entering the territory of Transylvania, the Saxon colonization began. The first fortifications appeared since the fifteenth century as a way of defending against Ottoman attacks. In 1486 Sibiu together with the districts of Braşov and Bistriţa formed the “Saxon community” – Universitas Saxonum. The most important municipality of Sibiu County:
